GOLDEN VALLEY FARMER’S GROUP
The effects of climate change in Jamaica are disproportionately experienced by farmers who have seen drastic changes in rainfall in recent years. Golden Valley, in rural St. Thomas, Jamaica - one of the poorest areas of the island - is a traditional coffee and cocoa farming area. The increasingly pronounced changes in conditions have caused farmers to seek alternative sources of income because growing traditional crops is no longer an economically viable means of employment.
The Golden Valley Farmers Group in rural Jamaica plans to build a food grade honey processing room out of a repurposed shipping container. This project will enable more than 40 farmers to earn an alternative income through apiculture (bee farming).
